New 10-seat Japanese restaurant, Roji, to open in Mayfair, London | Latest news

If you’ve been planning a trip to Japan until it closes its borders, well, we’ve got some dietary news that might take your fancy. There is a new restaurant from two accomplished Japanese chefs in Mayfair called Roji.

The name Roji can translate to ‘journey / path’ or ‘hidden alley’, which is quite apt, as this is a small shrine tucked away in an alleyway in Mayfair. In fact, you will have to be quick with your reservations, as this is an intimate 10 seat location of husband and wife chefs Tamas Naszai and Tomoko Hasegawa. And when we say “accomplished” chefs, that’s no understatement: Tamas and Tomoko previously worked at TokimeitÄ“ in Mayfair, a restaurant specializing in high quality Wagyu. Tamas is also a double winner of the Japanese Culinary Art Competition and Tomoko has also worked at L’Abysse au Pavillon Ledoyen, three Michelin stars, in Paris as well as at Ginza Shimon in Tokyo.

The folks behind Mayfair’s Chisou and Great Portland Street’s Sushi Atelier are teaming up on the restaurant – and that means patrons of those restaurants will get priority reservations before reservations open to the general public, which seems fair.

So what’s on the menu at Roji? Think: seasonal British produce with a focus on sushi, marinating and preserving, charcoal grills and casseroles, all served on carefully selected tableware from small family producers in Japan and the UK. In terms of provenance, you can expect seafood from the Cornish fishermen and vegetables from the Nama Yasai farm in East Sussex, as well as herbs and forage mushrooms.

There will be five dinners and four lunches per week, with dinners priced at around £ 150 per person (excluding drinks) with lower prices for lunch. On the drink side, there will be a list of premium sakes, with hard-to-find and limited-edition bottles.
