Illinois Japanese restaurant under fire for refusing to serve two black customers

An Asian food court stand in Illinois went viral on TikTok after an employee refused to serve two black sisters due to his alleged encounter with another black person earlier today.

What happened: TikTok user @labellamonay shared the incident Sunday, and the clip has been viewed over 1.1 million times as of this writing.

  • In the two-minute video, the TikTok user confronts an Asian waiter at Nori Japan at Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, Ill., After allegedly refusing to serve the woman’s sister, because she is black.

  • @labellamonay argues that his sister pays the man for his order, but he still refuses to serve it because a black customer did not pay for his meal earlier today.

  • “‘Because she’s black? Because another black person took your food and didn’t pay, aren’t you going to serve my sister? asks the TikTok user. “You can’t do that, sir. It’s discrimination. You can’t tell her you’re not going to serve her, because she’s black because of what someone else did today.

  • You don’t pay any money, ”replies the man. The TikTok user then asks, “What does this have to do with us? I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir. We’re not affiliated with them.”

  • I thought I would never have to do something like that, ”the woman can be heard saying in the video. “Well what’s worse, the person we don’t know isn’t paying you $ 5 or we’re suing you for discrimination?” “

  • The man then replies: “I don’t know. Same face.

The reaction: The reactions of many users were mixed, with some defending the Asian server and others calling it for discrimination.

  • He is wrong but I also understand this man is traumatized and hurt. Understanding should come from both sides, ”said one TikTok user.

  • However, @labellamonay called out to anyone defending the man by posting another video showing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which “prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin”.

  • I’m half Asian and I’m sick of my people DEFEND people like them just because they’re old and don’t speak much English. He’s a grown-up, ”wrote one TikTok user.

  • I don’t understand how you all view obvious discrimination and choose to stand up for this man, ”another user wrote.
