A two-story Japanese restaurant will land on this prominent SF rooftop

An ambitious project arrives in San Francisco Transbay Transit Centerfeatures a two-story Japanese restaurant run by acclaimed Bay Area chefs, a Japanese market, and a private NFT club with perks like celebrity omakase meals.

These are the first concrete details about SHŌ Group’s (formerly JSSK Group, best known for Berkeley Iyasare restaurant) plans for rooftop space at 425 Mission St., which were first announced in 2019. Called SHŌ, the restaurant will open in 2023 in the 5.4-acre Public Park above the Salesforce Transit Center – the latest in a line of new businesses the city hopes will attract people to the $2.2 billion project. dollars and help spur downtown recovery.

The splashy space will house two restaurants in one. A dining room on the ground floor will specialize in Japanese irori cuisine, named after the built-in fireplace used in Japanese farmhouses as a source of heat and cooking. SHŌ’s setup will certainly be splashier: Everything on the menu will be cooked over a 40-square-foot charcoal fireplace in an elegant fine-dining restaurant with views of the San Francisco skyline. Shotaro “Sho” Kamio, chef-owner of Iyasare and namesake of the hotel group, will lead the new restaurant. They claim this will be the first irori restaurant in the United States

In an announcement, Kamio said he was excited to bring the “umami-laden dishes” of Irori cuisine to a “one-of-a-kind location” in San Francisco.

Upstairs will be a sushi bar run by chef Masaki Sasaki, known for earning a Michelin star at the now closed Maruya and Sasaki restaurants. Called the Sky Lounge, it will serve sushi and small plates. More details on the menu were not available.

And that’s not all: the SHŌ Group also plans to open a Japanese market on the ground floor of the Salesforce Transit Center. SHŌ Market will sell bento boxes using the same ingredients served upstairs, take-out sushi, salads, sake and household products.

Group SHŌ is the new incarnation of the former JSSK group of Kamio and his business partner Josh Sigel. They now describe the group as an “experiential hospitality platform” that is getting into the world of NFTs, or “non-fungible tokens,” a tech trend that has plagued restaurants in recent years. Diners will be able to purchase NFTs to access perks like a members-only menu, omakase dinners with celebrities, and a car that will pick them up and drop them off for meals.
